Joypratip Sengupta Joins Airtel Nigeria as Senior Vice President

Joypratip Sengupta has taken on a new leadership role as Senior Vice President at Airtel Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest telecom operators. Based in Lagos, he joins the Executive Committee and will be spearheading nationwide Sales & Distribution. With Airtel Nigeria serving over 60 million customers, Joypratip’s mandate includes driving growth across GSM, Smartcash, and Home Broadband businesses while advancing channel digitization, distribution expansion, and deeper market penetration strategies in one of the world’s most competitive telecom markets.


Prior to this, Joypratip served as Chief Sales & Distribution Officer at Ooredoo Tunisie, where he led a sweeping commercial transformation. His contributions in Tunisia included expanding retail presence, strengthening partner ecosystems, and driving channel digitization. Notably, he orchestrated the entry into the 5G market, positioning Ooredoo as a customer-first digital operator in the North African telecom landscape.


His career also spans Ooredoo Myanmar, where as Director of Sales Distribution, he built and scaled a nationwide distribution network during a period of political and economic instability, as well as the Covid pandemic. Despite the challenges, he successfully drove double-digit revenue growth through rural penetration and digital adoption. This global experience has shaped him into a resilient and visionary leader, well-prepared for his mandate in Nigeria.


Earlier in India, Joypratip held senior roles at Vodafone Idea Limited, where as Vice President of Sales he played a pivotal role in executing the largest telecom merger in Indian history by consolidating distribution within 100 days. His leadership in digital transformation earned him the prestigious Business Excellence Award from the Aditya Birla Group. During his long tenure with Vodafone India, he rose from Management Trainee to Vice President, making significant contributions in marketing, sales, and brand transitions.


With over two decades of experience across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, Joypratip Sengupta’s appointment at Airtel Nigeria marks an exciting chapter for the organization. His proven expertise in scaling markets, digitizing channels, and driving customer-centric growth will play a pivotal role in shaping Airtel’s next phase of expansion in Nigeria.
